Generic Propecia (Finasteride) is the only FDA-approved treatment for hair loss, in men on the top of the head and the front of the mid-scalp area. Results of Propecia use vary, but for most men, it increases the number of hairs in the first 12 months of treatment and helps create thicker hair in the balding areas. Results may be visible in as little as 3 months. The improvement lasts only as long as you take Propecia, if you stop, new hair growth will cease and hair loss will resume. It has not been shown to have any effect on female postmenopausal hair loss and should not be used by women.
Direction
Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine comes with a patient information leaflet. Read it carefully. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. If you miss a dose of this medicine and you remember the same day, take it as soon as possible. If you do not remember until the next day, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Store this medicine at room temperature, away from moisture.
Cautions
Propecia is approved for men only. Any woman who is pregnant or who may become pregnant should not handle crushed or broken tablets of this medicine. If a woman who is pregnant comes in contact with crushed or broken tablets of this medicine, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
Side Effects
Side effects of Propecia use are generally mild. If you experience skin rash or lip swelling (symptoms of toxicity) inform your doctor immediately. There is a very low chance of sexual side effects, which include decrease in sexual desire, difficulty achieving an erection, and a decrease in the amount of semen. These effects go away by themselves when the man stops taking Propecia.
Overdose
Although no specific information is available on Propecia overdose, any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose of Propecia, seek medical attention immediately.
